Acupuncture (Dry Needling) Surrey

Western Medical Acupuncture (Dry needling) uses the same needles and sometimes the same points as traditional Chinese medicine, but it differs in its assessment, diagnosis and understanding of how it works.

It is an adaption of Chinese acupuncture that uses the up-to-date knowledge of anatomy and physiology combines with the current understanding of pathology and Western evidence-based medicine principles.

Dry needling no longer relies on the principles of Chinese medicine, such as the flow of Qi, five elements or the balancing of yin/yang.

It acts mainly by stimulating the nervous system to aid with pain relief and is used predominantly to treat muscle, tendon, ligament, and joint pain, including what is referred to as trigger points. Unlike traditional Chinese acupuncture, we place the needles at or near the site of the pain rather than at the extremities.

Our Osteopath has undergone training with the British Medical Acupuncture Society, which is considered the gold standard for dry needling training.

The initial training covers specific acupuncture and muscular trigger points, anatomy and physiology and the most recent evidence. We have also done training for back pain, headaches, and electro acupuncture.

Here at Arc Osteopathy, we use acupuncture alongside traditional osteopathic techniques and osteopathic diagnosis. We find it works particularly well in:

  • treatment of acute pain
  • reduction of muscle spasms
  • pain at the lower back, including the sacroiliac joints
  • treatment of headaches

As you would expect of a regulated healthcare professional, our professional indemnity insurance covers us to provide acupuncture within an osteopathic appointment.
